A note arrived from Fitzwilliam the next morning. He was asking her to come to the townhouse on Grosvenor’s Street. He sounded discouraged and assumed it was going to take longer than expected to find Wickham. He did not want to be parted from her for that long.

Lizzy was immediately ready to go to London, but she had to discuss it with Mrs. Hamel first. She sought out the other woman, finding her in the nursery as she was preparing Ian for the day. “Mrs. Hamel, I fear I have a large favor to ask of you.”

“What is it, Mrs. Darcy?” Mrs. Hamel gave her a cheerful smile as she laid Ian in his crib.

“Mr. Darcy has asked us to travel to London to join him at Grosvenor’s Street. I understand that would put you some distance from your own child, and I would not wish to force you to do something you do not want. Would you be amenable to the idea, or perhaps you could bring along your son?” That idea occurred to her as she recalled Martha’s request to have William with her while caring for Ian.

Mrs. Hamel blinked, and then she smiled. “That is most gracious of you, Mrs. Darcy. I believe I can handle a few days’ separation, but if it becomes a prolonged stay in London, I should like to send for him and my husband, if that is acceptable?”

“It is certainly acceptable. I shall leave standing orders with Mrs. Reynolds and the grooms in the stables to ensure your husband has a phaeton at his disposal should he wish to come to London to join you.”

Mrs. Hamel’s eyes widened. “That is far too generous, Mrs. Darcy.”

“To the contrary, you are doing me and Ian a great service. I could do no less than to take care of you in return, so if your family desires to join you, and we are gone too long, I feel it is incumbent upon me to ensure they can do so.”

Mrs. Hamel looked flustered for the first time since Lizzy had met her, and she nodded. “That is very gracious, Mrs. Darcy. When do you wish to depart?”

“Within hours.” Lizzy was anxious to return to London to see her husband again, and she wanted to share her speculation with him. She had not yet had a chance to consult with a midwife, and that would be a top priority when she got to London.
